Chinese Steamed Buns (Mantou)

Mantou is a traditional Chinese staple food, commonly consumed in northern China. It is a type of white, round, and soft bread-like food made from simple ingredients such as wheat flour, water, and yeast.

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast and warm water. Use your hands or the dough hook of a stand mixer to knead until a smooth dough forms. Cover the dough with a wet kitchen towel and allow it to ferment for 1 hour.
  • Once the dough has doubled in size, transfer it to a floured board and gently knead for a few minutes.
  • Roll the dough into a long rope, then cut it into balls with a diameter of 1 inch (2.54 cm). Shape each dough piece into a bun.
  • Prepare a steamer basket and line it with parchment paper. Arrange the buns on the parchment paper, leaving some space between them. Cover the steamer basket with a lid and let the buns rest for another 10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, fill a pot with water and bring it to a boil. Once the water is boiling, place the steamer basket with the buns on top and steam over high heat for 12 minutes. Carefully remove the steamer basket from the pot. Serve hot and enjoy!
