For many, enjoying a slice of Apple Upside-Down Cake is like taking a nostalgic journey back to the kitchen of their youth, where the aroma of baking apples filled the air and a warm slice of cake was a comforting treat. It’s a reminder that the most cherished recipes are not just about flavors but the memories they carry.
Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges.
In a small saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of butter over medium heat. Stir in 1/2 cup of brown sugar and cook, stirring, until the mixture becomes smooth and starts to bubble. Remove from heat and whisk in 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
Pour the caramel into the bottom of a greased 9-inch (23cm) round cake pan. Arrange the apple slices on top of the caramel in the cake pan. You can create a decorative pattern if you like.
In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
In a separate large mixing bowl, cream softened unsalted butter, granulated sugar and light brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and pure vanilla extract until well combined. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and pour in the whole milk. Mix until just combined. Pour the cake batter over the arranged apple slices in the cake pan.
Place the cake pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool for a few minutes in the pan, then run a knife around the edges to loosen it. Place a serving plate on top of the pan and carefully invert the cake onto the plate.
Serve the apple upside-down cake warm or at room temperature. It's delicious on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
