  • Wash and thoroughly dry the apples. Remove any stems and insert sticks into the top of each apple. Set them aside on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  • In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the brown sugar, corn syrup, sweetened condensed milk and a pinch of salt. Continue to stir until the mixture comes to a boil.
  • Reduce the heat to medium and continue to cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and turns a deep golden caramel color. This should take about 25 minutes. Be cautious as the mixture can splatter. Remove the caramel from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Allow it to cool slightly.
  • Carefully dip each apple into the caramel sauce, turning and twisting to coat it evenly. Allow any excess caramel to drip back into the saucepan. If desired, roll the caramel-coated apples in optional toppings like chopped nuts, crushed cookies, sprinkles, or chocolate chips while the caramel is still tacky.
  • Place the caramel-coated apples back onto the parchment paper-lined baking sheet and let them cool at room temperature. The caramel will harden as it cools.

Notes

Be cautious when working with hot caramel as it can cause burns. Children should be supervised during the caramel dipping process.
