Ingredients
-
2
large onions
(cut into 1/4-inch / 0.6 cm thick rings)
-
Bread crumbs
(to coat)
-
Vegetable oil
(for frying)
Batter:
-
1
cup
(120 g) all-purpose flour
-
1
cup
(240 g) milk
-
1
large egg
-
1
tsp
(4 g) baking powder
-
1
tsp
(2 g) paprika
-
1/2
tsp
(3 g) salt
-
1/4
tsp
(0.5 g) black pepper
-
1/2
tsp
(0.7 g) garlic powder
Instructions
-
Separate the onion slices into rings and place them in a large bowl.
-
In a medium-sized bowl, combine all the batter ingredients. Use a whisk to beat until it's just smooth.
-
Place bread crumbs in another bowl.
-
Pour enough vegetable oil into a large, deep frying pan to reach a depth of about 2 inches / 5 cm. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 365°F (185°C). You can test the oil's readiness by dropping a small piece of bread into it; if it sizzles and turns golden brown, the oil is ready.
-
Dip each onion ring into the flour mixture, making sure to shake off any excess. Place onion in the bread crumbs and turn several times to coat.
-
Carefully place a few coated onion rings at a time into the hot oil. Be cautious not to overcrowd the pan, as it can lower the oil temperature. Fry the rings for about 2-3 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil. Repeat this process until all the rings are fried.
-
Crispy onion rings are best enjoyed right away while they are hot and crunchy. Serve them as an appetizer with your favorite dipping sauce.
